“There just aren’t enough hours in the day!” We’ve all said this at point or another in our lives. For example, when we look at our inbox, tasks may seem never-ending. The phone is constantly ringing with requests from folks who want more and more of our time.
We may sacrifice our sleep in order to complete the sheer number of tasks we’re faced with. However, when we lack sleep, that makes it more difficult to complete our tasks because our brain and body are not fully functional when we’re tired. So, what is one to do?
Believe it or not, getting your sleep is actually the better option. In the United States, our culture is very production driven. In some companies, employers abide by the “results first, sleep later” philosophy rather than protecting the health of the employee. This has led many to believe that if they take time for themselves for rest, they are not being good, productive employees.
In truth, your body needs an adequate amount of sleep function optimally. When we sleep, our cells cleanse and regenerate. Our organs can then repair any damage done during the day. Our systems are able to re-set themselves, including our brain.
Haven’t you noticed that when you are tired, you’re not able to think clearly? At times, you may even experience what’s commonly known as “brain fog.” This is proof that your brain needs rest. At some point, if you don’t take the time to rest voluntarily, your body will shut down and do it for you.
If you truly want to give your absolute best to your employer, your clients, and the people around you, do yourself a favor by taking care of yourself by getting your rest. You can’t be at your best if your mind and body are over-tired. Rest is absolutely essentially for good health.
When you find yourself constantly tired, take a good look at your priorities and see what may need some adjustment. What good is it to succeed in something, but not have the energy to even enjoy your achievement?
