Depression and anxiety are mood disorders that affect approximately 1 out of 10 Americans, many of whom do not seek help or treatment. Although there are various causes for these disorders, there are certain foods that can worsen your depression or anxiety.

In this article, you will find a list of foods to avoid if you are dealing with these conditions. Even if depression or anxiety is currently not an issue for you, the constant consumption of these foods can lead you down the path of having to deal with these mood disorders later in life.

The importance of your mood cannot be overstated as it directly connects with your overall health.   If you are feeling depressed, then, according this article, it will put you at an increased risk for diabetes and dementia.

As an ovarian cancer survivor who came back to vibrant life after being admitted into hospice, I can personally speak on the importance of mood. Sometimes, it may be tough to bolster your mood when your body is in pain or not functioning as it should.  When I was on my deathbed being administered with morphine on an IV, I realized that it did nothing to reduce my pain.  Instead, I noticed the effects of the drug making me not care about my condition, so I immediately requested that the IV be stopped.  For me, having a sound mind that was positive and full of hope was of utmost importance, because our ability to think and how we feel emotionally factors into the important decisions we need to make for ourselves and those whom we love.

So, to help support not only my immune system to deal with the cancer, it was important to me that my food choices also helped to keep my mind clear and my mood positive, even when faced with one of the toughest challenges in my life–that of confronting my own mortality.

While you may not be challenged with something that is life-threatening, remember that the food that you eat should be fuel for your body. If you are feeling depressed or anxious and cannot identify the cause, consider the foods that you are eating. Eat well to live a healthier, happier life!
