How many are aware that September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month?  You may be more familiar with the pink ribbons commonly seen for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Instead of pink, however, the color used to show support for Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month in September is teal.

Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death among gynecological cancers each year.  In 2015, approximately 21,290 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the United States, and an estimated 14,180 will die from the disease.  Ovarian cancer is known as the “silent cancer” or the “cancer that whispers” because of its vague symptoms that can easily mimic other conditions like gastroenteritis, irritable bowel syndrome, or even strained back muscles.  These symptoms include:

  • Bloating for no apparent reason
  • Early satiety, where you feel full after eating just a few bites of your meal
  • Pain or pressure in your pelvis, abdomen, or back
  • Changes in the frequency or urgency or urination
  • Painful intercourse
  • Abnormal bleeding

In addition to the above symptoms, I also experienced bruising on my abdomen due to internal hemorrhaging or bleeding.  I was diagnosed with a malignant and rare form of ovarian cancer, known as granulosa cell tumor, where my condition deteriorated to the point of my lungs collapsing and filling with fluid.  At that point, I was placed into hospice care and my oncologist gave me 1 to 2 months to live.  However, rather than going through the harmful side effects of chemotherapy or radiation, I declined, and chose, instead, to heal holistically.  By God’s grace, I miraculously recovered by essentially changing how I eat, think, and pray.

If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms for more than a few weeks, please go see your gynecologist because the earlier it’s diagnosed, the more treatable the disease is. Don’t wait until it’s too late.  Please share this with all your friends and loved ones.  On behalf of www.saveherlife.org, knowledge is power and together, we can save her life!
